I'm trying to create a bootable Windows 7 USB on a Windows 7 system. I searched through the messages and didn't see anything exactly like this, so I'm posting.. hoping it's something I'm just missing. Every time I run Rufus, I get the same error. 'Error: ISO image extraction failure'. I'm using Rufus v1.4.3.385 .. and the log file looks like this: I suspect it has to do with 'Error reading UDF file booten-usbootsect.exe.mui' .. but I have created a bootable DVD with this ISO image (I downloaded the image straight from Microsoft) and it seems to boot and run OK. The reason I'm trying to create a bootable USB is the system I'm installing on has driver issues with the DVD drive.. so I was really hoping this would get around that problem. Any help? Thanks in advance!!Scott |

You should believe Rufus when it says your ISO is corrupted. Yes, even some of the ISOs Microsoft produces can be corrupted. CD/DVD creations tools may be more forgiving, but Rufus isn't. If this isn't the same problem as #278, feel free to reopen this issue. |

Just remember that you can check the SHA-1 from your ISO in Rufus, by clicking the (✓) button next to SELECT in Rufus 3.0 or later (or the # button at the bottom of the interface for earlier versions). If you then google for the SHA-1 computed by Rufus and get no hits, then either your ISO is corrupted, or it's a very custom ISO, and you should try to get your hands on a Microsoft official one. |

My antivirus was the cause of iso image extraction failure.. :( |

I had the same problem. For some reason Rufus selected FAT32 with a cluster size of 4096 when it started up, even though FAT is the default. I switched it to FAT with the default cluster size and that worked. |

So today I've decided to delete Ubuntu from my dual-boot(the other being Windows 7) and I restarted but I needed a bootable USB or CD with the Windows 7 ISO. I didn't have either so I downloaded Windows 7 Home Premium x64 from a site onto a USB and tried booting but I end up with:
BOOTMRG is missing
Press any key to restart
error: no such partition
Entering rescue mode. . .
grub rescue> _
This would be in the command prompt. I assume that the ISO is bootable, I downloaded it from here: http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/
If it is not bootable, can someone guide me somewhere to make it bootable or a bootable ISO download file?
I do have a valid Windows 7 Home Premium x64 key if anyone is curious.
This is an HP Pavilion
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

I am trying to install windows 7 from a USB UEFI stick that I tried to create in vain. I read other posts on creating UEFI USB Boot sticks and found Rufus the most convenient option . However , Rufus won't allow me a choice of GPT method and Fat32. It complains that it needs a UEFI ISO image.

So I gather , from this that my ISO does not have the typical EFI files. How do I get these files and what files are needed. What I have is a multiboot ISO that lets you choose between 64 and 32 bit versions. Dir structure is like this
Under EFI
Under Boot
Is this is an issue with missing EFI files is there a way I can download them , alternately can I use GRUB BASED EFI Loader to boot dual boot windows 8 and windows 7 on a EFI Laptop. Just to clarify windows 8 is pre-installed.Windows 7 needs to be installed as dual boot option to windows 8 using a UEFI USB stick .

It won’t work because you have a non-official ISO image. You need an unmodified Windows 7 x64 ISO image. Windows 7 x86 aka 32-bit is not UEFI-compatible.

Another approach:
- Create your USB bios boot key with Windows USB/DVD Download Tool and use the Microsoft Windows 8 ISO
- Move all the content off the key to a temporary location
- Format the USB key to FAT32 (use diskmgmt.msc or diskpart for this)
- Move the files from the temporary location onto the USB key
- Disable 'Legacy BIOS'
- Boot on the USB key
- When the install wizard starts, press Shift+F10 to open the Command Prompt.
From here, you can execute diskpart, then use 'clean' & 'convert GPT' subcommand, etc.
Enjoy!

Try the following procedure to create an UEFI USB Boot Stick without any extra software:
- Attach your USB stick to the PC (it has to be 4GB or larger)
- Press -> Windows Key + R
- Type then hit enter -> diskpart (a command prompt will open)
- Type in the black window -> list disk
- Find your USB disk (example: disk 1)
- Type -> sel disk N (where N is the number of the identified disk in the previous step)
- Type -> clean
- Type -> create part primary
- Type -> assign
- Type -> active
- Type -> format fs=FAT32 quick (it'll erase everything in your USB sick)
- You can close the diskpart
- Mount the image of Windows you have, open it and copy everything to the USB stick.
- Done!
Make sure the disk you select is the USB Stick by verifying the size to avoid loss of data.

Windows 7 and older Windows Versions do not support UEFI. They still support the BIOS. Hence the ISO does not come preloaded with UEFI boot images for your motherboard to recognize. That's the reason RUFUS doesn't allows you to write the ISO.
